How to Uninstall Apps on Android: Every Method Explained

    July 25, 2026
how to uninstall apps on android

Android gives you several different ways to uninstall apps, and which one is fastest depends a bit on your phone’s manufacturer, since Samsung, Google Pixel, and other brands each apply slightly different interfaces over the core Android system. Here’s a complete breakdown of every method, so you can pick whichever works best on your device.

The most common method is directly from the home screen or app drawer. Press and hold the icon of the app you want to remove until a menu or options pop up, then look for Uninstall (sometimes shown as a bin or trash icon you drag the app onto). Confirm when prompted, and the app along with its data will be removed from your device.

If long-pressing doesn’t bring up an uninstall option straight away, go through the Google Play Store instead. Open the Play Store, tap your profile icon in the top-right corner, select Manage apps & device, then Manage. Find the app in the list, tap it, and select Uninstall. This method works reliably across virtually every Android phone regardless of manufacturer, since it goes through Google’s own app management system rather than a manufacturer-specific home screen.

For the most thorough control, use your phone’s Settings app directly. Go to Settings, then Apps (sometimes labelled Apps & notifications), and you’ll see a complete list of everything installed on your device, including system apps that don’t normally appear in your app drawer. Tap the app you want to remove, then select Uninstall. This screen also shows you storage usage per app, which is handy if you’re trying to free up space and want to target the biggest offenders first.

Some apps, particularly ones pre-installed by your phone’s manufacturer or carrier, can’t be fully uninstalled through normal means. In these cases, you’ll often see a Disable option instead of Uninstall. Disabling stops the app from running and removes it from your app drawer, which achieves a similar practical result even though the app technically remains on your device in a dormant state.

If an app refuses to uninstall and gives an error message, this is often because it has been granted device administrator privileges, commonly used by security or parental control apps. To fix this, go to Settings, Security (or Biometrics and security, depending on your phone), then Device admin apps, and revoke permission for the problematic app before trying to uninstall it again.

Keeping your Android phone free of unused apps not only frees up storage but can also improve battery life and overall performance, since fewer apps means fewer background processes competing for resources. Whether you use the quick press-and-hold shortcut, the Google Play Store, or the full Settings menu, uninstalling apps on Android is a simple habit worth doing regularly.

It’s also worth distinguishing between uninstalling an app completely and simply clearing its cache or data, which are different actions available in the same Settings, Apps menu. Clearing cache removes temporary files without deleting the app itself, which can be a useful troubleshooting step for a misbehaving app before resorting to a full uninstall and reinstall.

For anyone using a work or managed Android device, some apps may be locked in place by an organisation’s mobile device management policy, meaning the Uninstall option is greyed out entirely regardless of which method you try. In this case, the app can only be removed by your organisation’s IT administrator adjusting the device policy remotely, so it’s worth contacting your workplace IT support rather than assuming something is broken on your end.

Lastly, remember that uninstalling an app doesn’t automatically cancel any subscription tied to it if that subscription was purchased through the Google Play Store; head to the Play Store’s Subscriptions section separately to cancel any recurring charges you no longer want.
